When do I need to register for GST?
GST registration is generally compulsory if your total taxable turnover from all taxable activities was more than $60,000 in the last 12 months, or you expect it to be more than $60,000 in the next 12 months. You may also need to register if you add GST to your prices. These are rolling tests, not only tax-year tests.
GST is usually charged at 15%. A registered business collects GST on taxable sales, files GST returns, and may claim GST credits for purchases that relate to its taxable activity, subject to the GST rules and adequate records.
You may be able to register voluntarily below the threshold if you carry on a taxable activity. Voluntary registration also creates ongoing filing and record-keeping obligations.
The old tax-invoice rules were replaced by taxable supply information rules from 1 April 2023. The information you need to hold depends on the value and circumstances of the supply.
Monitor your rolling turnover and register through myIR when a compulsory test is met. Ask the Afirmo tax team to check unusual supplies, overseas sales, mixed activities, or the correct registration date.
