What is an IRD number?

An IRD number is the unique tax identification number Inland Revenue uses for a person, business or organisation.

  • An individual uses their personal IRD number.
  • A sole trader normally uses their personal IRD number for the business.
  • A company, partnership, trust or other organisation generally needs its own IRD number.
  • The people involved may also need their own IRD numbers for their personal tax obligations.

The application process and documents depend on whether the applicant is an individual or an organisation, and whether they are in New Zealand, newly arrived or applying from overseas.

A New Zealand bank account is not required in every situation. Follow Inland Revenue's current application route for the applicant's circumstances, or ask the Afirmo team for help.
