How is Afirmo different from Hnry?
Afirmo and Hnry both help New Zealand business owners with accounting and tax, but they use different service, money-flow and pricing models.
Business types
Afirmo supports sole traders, partnerships and New Zealand companies. Its plans are structured around the business type and the number of GST returns required.
Hnry's core New Zealand service is designed for sole traders, freelancers and contractors. A company or partnership should confirm whether Hnry supports its structure before relying on the service.
Accounting and tax support
Both services provide more than accounting software alone.
Every Afirmo plan includes online accounting software and access to a New Zealand based Afirmo accountant. That accountant prepares and files the returns included in the plan.
Hnry describes its service as a full accounting and tax service for sole traders. Its service includes income-tax and GST-return filing, expense management and access to its accounting team.
It would be incorrect to describe Hnry as only a payments provider or to say Hnry does not prepare tax returns.
How money moves
With normal Afirmo bank-feed connections, the customer continues using their existing bank accounts. The connection imports transaction information for accounting purposes. The optional Afirmo Business Wallet is a separate service that only holds money the customer chooses to transfer into it.
Hnry generally requires self-employed income to be paid into a Hnry Account. Hnry deducts its fee and calculated amounts for tax before transferring the remaining funds according to the customer's instructions. Customers should read Hnry's current service agreement for the detailed rules applying to income received outside the Hnry Account.
Pricing model
Afirmo uses fixed monthly or annual plan prices. Every paid plan has a 12-month commitment, including plans paid monthly. Different plans cover different business structures and GST-return allowances.
As checked on 6 August 2026, Hnry charges 1 percent plus GST of self-employed income, capped at $1,500 plus GST per financial year. Individual payments under $50 have a minimum fee of $0.50 plus GST.
These are different pricing models. Compare the total annual cost and included services rather than comparing one monthly figure with one percentage.
Which service might suit me?
Afirmo may suit a business that:
- operates through a company or partnership;
- wants to retain its existing business bank accounts;
- prefers a fixed plan price;
- wants accounting software and accountant-prepared returns in one plan; or
- expects its structure or GST needs to change.
Hnry may suit someone who:
- operates as a sole trader, freelancer or contractor;
- is comfortable directing self-employed income through the Hnry Account;
- prefers a percentage-of-income fee; or
- wants Hnry to calculate and pay tax progressively from income received.
The right choice depends on business structure, GST registration, income pattern, bookkeeping requirements and preferred control over payment flows.
